  • Name: Marine Species Database for Eastern Africa (MASDEA)
  • Description: MASDEA is a biogeographic/taxonomic database of marine species (including fishes) in the Western Indian Ocean/East Africa. The database was originally developed by Edward Vanden Berghe while working as project manager of the RECOSCIX-WIO project in Mombasa, and now maintained as a collaborative venture between the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) and VLIZ.

In addition to SAIAB and MASDEA, the African Marine Atlas project is developing partnerships with other providers of fish data. Important links for fishes are provided below, to be investigated independently for distribution records of individual species.

Additional data resources Image
  • Title: Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS)
  • Author: Census of Marine Life (CoML)
  • Data type: GIS global information on marine species
  • Description: "OBIS is a web-based provider of global geo-referenced information on marine species. We contain expert species level and habitat level databases and provide a variety of spatial query tools for visualizing relationships among species and their environment. OBIS strives to assess and integrate biological, physical, and chemical oceanographic data from multiple sources. Users of OBIS, including researchers, students, and environmental managers, will gain a dynamic view of the multi-dimensional oceanic world."

  • Title: Fish distributions for coastal Africa
  • Author: Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)
  • Data type: Online database of fish distributions, taxonomy and collections
  • Description: GBIF faciltates the "digitisation and global dissemination of primary biodiversity data, so that people from all countries can benefit from the use of the information."
