47 Commercially important taxa or families of marine species for Africa were selected. The two most important marine fisheries for each coastal country were selected, and then several shared stocks were added to this primary list. Fisheries catch data were sourced from the FAO, and distribution data for species of interest were sourced from GBIF. Distribution records of groups or families (above the species level) are not shown.

  • Name: Commercial fisheries for coastal Africa.
  • Source and original publisher of catch data: Catch data for 48 fish and invertebrate families/species were extracted from the FAO Fishery Statistics Capture Production Yearbook vol 90/1, 2000.  Families/species were chosen based on importance in catches, and only the highest catch(es) were chosen for each country.  Data were digitized to country polygons.
  • Catch data citation: FAO Fishery Statistics Capture Production Yearbook vol 90/1, 2000.
  • Source and original publisher of species distribution data: Species distributions were sourced from GBIF.  Point distribution data were downloaded from FishBase and converted to point shapefile format. Individual citations are provided for each species (below).
  • Illustrations and images: Images were obtained from various sources, and individual citations are provided below.  For family catch data or genus catch data, a representative species image was chosen and does not necessarily represent the species represented in the catch.
  • Data downloads: Please click on the country catch maps and the distribution maps in order to download zipped shapefiles of the data.
