Seagrasses are flowering marine plants that generally occur in shallow, low-energy environments on sandy or muddy substrate.

The African Marine Atlas project is developing partnerships with seagrass data providers. No seagrass datasets are available for direct download, but a link is provided to the UNEP WCMC World Atlas of Seagrasses, an excellent resource of seagrass data. For additional data and metadata lists and links, please visit the African Ocean Portal and NASA's Global Change Master Directory.

Additional data resources

  • Name: Status and trends in seagrass distribution for coastal Africa
  • Description: Seagrass distribution and area coverage as published by the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC).
